The top leaves are removed which will then expose the tassel of the corn a few days later to allow a puller to come through and remove the tassel. The tassel is where the pollen comes from which pollinates the silks on the ear of the corn. In seed corn you want the male tassels spreading pollen on the female silks in turn breeding the corn making a hybrid. The silks are the fine hairs you remove before cooking sweet corn. This is a common misconception on how corn is bred most thinking it’s all done in a lab when in reality it can be as simple as nature doing it’s job. These machines are old & outdated but still very useful and get the job done taking 6 rows of corn at a time.
