This is how we Put one piece of steel into another piece of steel (cast iron in this case) using heat and cold. This is known as a shrink fit and it is a permanent connection. Our sleeve is actually .003" BIGGER than the bored hole. In this case the internal sleeve is cooled down in a cooler of dry ice this causes it to shrink in diameter about .003". While the sleeve is cooling we heat up the casting ALOT! this causes the casting to grow and as a result the bore also grows. in this case the casting grew about .012". this is an operation we perform almost on a daily basis. filmed at http://www.diamondstatemachining.com/
