He was known for writing songs strictly as he felt them in his heart and drew from many of his own life experiences. He wrote over 200 hymns in his lifetime. Many different singers have recorded the song such as Brenda Lee, Tammy Wynette, Johnny Cash, and Dolly Parton, along with a long list of many others.
