Ṭā-Sīn (طس) – A Mystical Title of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)

The term "Ṭā-Sīn (طس)" appears at the beginning of Surah An-Naml in the Qur’an:

"Ṭā-Sīn. These are the verses of the Qur’an and a clear Book."
(Surah An-Naml 27:1)

These are from the group of mysterious letters known as “Ḥurūf al-Muqattaʿāt” — disjointed letters that open several chapters in the Qur’an. Their precise meaning is known only to Allah, but over the centuries, scholars and mystics have offered reflections on their possible significance.

Among Sufi scholars and mystics, “Ṭā-Sīn” has been interpreted as a symbolic title of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). This interpretation draws from the understanding that:

The letter "Ṭā" (ط) refers to "Ṭāhā", a name considered by many to be a noble title of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

The letter "Sīn" (س) refers to "Yāsīn", another prominent title used for the Prophet (PBUH) in Surah Yā Sīn.


Thus, the combination "Ṭā-Sīn" is seen by some as a spiritual or coded name for the Messenger of Allah (PBUH), carrying within it a deep reverence and mystical reflection of his elevated status.

Renowned scholars such as Imam al-Rāzī, and Sufi figures like Ibn ʿArabī, have pointed to the possibility of these letters containing allusions to the Prophet's reality and divine connection. In Sufi literature, especially in Arabic texts, it is not uncommon to see “Ṭā-Sīn – peace be upon him” used poetically to refer to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), highlighting his luminous essence.

While not a traditional or widely used name in mainstream scholarship, “Ṭā-Sīn” reflects the deep spiritual love and reverence that mystics have for the Prophet (PBUH), seeing his presence even in the mysterious letters of the Qur’an.
