European animals – Northern water vole (Arvicola amphibius)

It sometimes (often) happens that I go to film a particular animal, but end up shooting a completely different one.

One day I was wading along the edge of the Svratka River, looking for dragonflies, when suddenly something furry floated on the water in front of my feet. My first thought was: "Hey, what's that mini-muskrat?" It wasn't until a second glance that I realized it was a good friend of all gardeners, the water vole.

I was quite surprised because the water was pretty rough in that spot and the little guy had a lot of work to keep the current from carrying it away. I didn't want to believe that I'd be able to get a shot, but I quickly hopped ashore and got my equipment out. The vole scrambled among the nearby rocks for a few more minutes, and surprisingly I managed to get a few shots. Then the little animal jumped into the water again and disappeared somewhere in the vegetation.

And as I'm sure you correctly guessed, I didn't see a single dragonfly that day.
