Gabriel Fauré (1845–1924) was a preeminent French composer, organist, and teacher whose refined style bridged the gap between Romanticism and early 20th-century modernism. As of 2026, his legacy remains central to French classical music, recently highlighted by the 2024 centennial of his death.

Gabriel Fauré's Trois mélodies, Op. 7, composed between 1870 and 1877, is one of his most celebrated song collections. Although the three songs were published individually, they were first grouped together in 1878.

Description: This is one of Fauré's most famous works. It describes a dream of an ethereal flight with a beloved, ending with the speaker’s painful awakening and desire to return to the illusion. Its soaring vocal line has made it a staple for both singers and instrumentalists (often arranged for cello or violin).

2. Hymne (Op. 7, No. 2)

Poet: Charles Baudelaire.
Description: A setting of Baudelaire's poem "À la très-chère, à la très-belle," this song maintains an ethereal and spiritual mood. It is characterized by a dramatic climax following the word "sel" (salt) before returning to a tranquil close.

3. Barcarolle (Op. 7, No. 3)
Original Key: G minor.
Poet: Marc Monnier.
Description: Written in a traditional 6/8 time signature to mimic the rocking of a Venetian gondola. The narrator, a gondolier, describes the lagoon as his castle and the moon as his curtain, singing of the many lovers he has rowed across the waters.
