The History of the VT League goes right back to the beginning of Touch Football in Victoria in the late 1970's and early 1980's. Victoria competed as a state at the very first Touch Football National event just over 30 years ago and the state has been searching for a vehicle to assist its elite player and official development since those days. In more recent times, two people, Peter Shefford and Micheal Lovett, both volunteers with extensive technical involvement with the sport, particularly as highly credentialled coaches, regularly championed the concept of a Victorian State League. David Brady, in the Touch Football Australia Victorian Office at the time, saw the opprtunity and drove the establishment of the very first VT League season in 2007 with a 4 team competition. The competition was then expanded to 6 teams in 2008. The 2011/12 competition will see the competition expanded again to include a mixed division in addition to Men's and Women's for the first time.

The 2008 Mens Open Grand Final saw the defending Champions the Casey Cougars take on the newcomers the Western Doders in Port Melbourne.
