The Black Men Who Invented Modern Emergency Medicine
In 1967, twenty-five unemployed Black men from Pittsburgh became America's first paramedics—and revolutionized emergency medicine forever. This is the story of Freedom House Ambulance Service: the pioneers who invented modern EMS, saved hundreds of lives, and were systematically erased by racism and politics.
Before Freedom House, emergency transport meant police vans or funeral homes with zero medical training. Dr. Peter Safar—whose daughter died because no one could provide emergency care en route to the hospital—partnered with Dr. Nancy Caroline to train these men in groundbreaking techniques: CPR in ambulances, defibrillation, intubation, IV administration. They responded in under 10 minutes and saved 200 lives in their first year alone.
Their ambulance design became the national standard. Their training manual became THE textbook for every paramedic in America. Yet in 1975, Pittsburgh shut them down. Most were fired, reassigned to non-medical work, or pushed out entirely. By the 1990s, Pittsburgh's EMS was 98% white.
Every time a paramedic saves someone today, it's because of what these men built. It's time their names are remembered.
