In this activity, we will demonstrate total internal reflection of light. For this activity, we need laser beam glass of water and milk. Add few drops of milk in water. This is to make the light beam visible. Keep the glass at some height. Switch off the light. Project the laser beam from one side of the glass you can see that a light beam travels in a straight line through the water. Now keep the laser beam at some angle. You can see that a light beam bends and instead of traveling straight up, you can see it bending and falling down. This phenomenon is called total internal reflection of light. Why does this happen? As light passes from denser medium to rarer medium, it usually undergoes refraction. In fact, some part of the insertion light get refracted while the remaining part get reflected and the fraction depends on the angle of incidence. As we see in this video, as the angle of incident increases beyond a certain critical value, life does not get refracted, but instead it treats the boundary like like a mirror and gets completely reflected.
