Soundtrack Notes

General/Tech info
This is a soundtrack I have wanted to record for a while. It has no sound test, and context sensitive music on top of that. There isn't really a good recording of it out there, until now (I hope).

GEMS bank data, and the actual Z80 driver, was ripped from the game by disassembling the ROM and finding the appropriate pointers. (The easiest way to do this is to look for the gemsinit code, set a breakpoint and check what is pushed onto the stack for the call). This bank data was inserted into a custom playback ROM, similar to how I have done some other GEMS games, with the added ability to manipulate the mailbox feature, described below.

This game uses the GEMS mailbox feature to communicate what character(s) is/are currently selected. This is why, until now, recordings of the game have been incomplete. It took me quite a bit of time to figure out how this worked in the disassembly. The entire game uses a big jump table and a small-code model, which means that the resulting disassembly is quite hard to read.

Some sequences take advantage of this mailbox thing and play a fitting melody for each character. If it is a two player game, two melodies will even play at the same time! My recording does not contain these versions because including every single combination of 2 players would make this video hours long. I did however include each character's version of a track edited into a "medley" if possible. Anyway, they have been "gently" spliced together into a whole piece except where noted.

Siberia
You may hear some clicks in the music; this is accurate playback.

The Clone Wars
Actually comprised of multiple sequences being triggered in order. This is sometimes a little audible in the form of a shaky tempo between transitions.

Sentinel Escape
The part where you have to run the level backward with the timer ticking down. Nothing notable except most recordings are missing this for some reason.

Avalon Intro
A snippet that plays before the "Outside Avalon" sequence in-game. I let it ring to completion.

Climbing the Temple
Magneto's version of the theme doesn't loop right. You won't hear it in this recording but it happens in the game too; I just assume nobody ever uses Magneto for this level!

Inside the Temple
Runs at 120bpm internally; plays at 114bpm in-game. Recorded at the in-game tempo.

Savage Land 2
At some point during the first loop, the bass gets louder and stays that way for the rest of the song. This might be a bug, but in the medley I took this into account and edited accordingly.

Magneto's Quarters / Phalanx Queen
These are the same song, the difference is the Magneto one plays a little slower at about 125bpm. I include both.

The Lab
I couldn't edit these together well so I just recorded them separately.

Brainchild etc.
This is in multiple parts triggered by what part of the boss you are fighting. Typically, you hear them for all of 5 seconds before the boss changes forms and the music changes to the main theme that is also used for Exodus. The official X-Men 2 arranged soundtrack has them all together in the same song, so I have arranged them roughly in the same way.

The ROM used to make this recording:

A button plays song, B button stops song, C button pauses/unpauses. Some songs are hard coded into the selector, but you can play any of the 256 sequences with the "Sequence" option.
Special thanks to MaskOfDestiny from SpritesMind for helping me to get this working on the real hardware. Check out his emulator BlastEm:
