The Caribbean is one of the most hazard prone regions of the world and as demonstrated during the 2020-2021 eruption of La Soufriere Volcano, St. Vincent; volcanic eruptions can generate a range of hazards that have a significant impact on multiple islands. Building resilience to these
hazards requires vulnerable island communities to fully integrate existing scientific knowledge of these phenomena into all aspects of their lives. A key element of such efforts is the design and construction of housing and infrastructure which fall within the remit of engineers.

In this presentation, Prof Robertson provides an overview of the current state of knowledge with regards volcanoes and volcanic hazards in the Caribbean region with special attention to aspects (e.g. hazard
origin, damaging characteristics and intensity metrics) that would be of particular interest to the engineering community.
