STORYLINE:
President-elect Rene Preval of Haiti thanked Argentina on Monday for its role in a U.N. peacekeeping force that he wants to continue guaranteeing stability in the Caribbean island nation.
Preval came for talks with Argentine President Nestor Kirchner after attending the weekend inauguration of new Chilean President Michelle Bachelet.
On Saturday, Preval stopped in Brazil, where President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva assured that the Brazilian troops leading the U.N. peacekeeping force in Haiti will stay as long as the Caribbean nation requests.
Brazil has led the U.N. force in Haiti since 2004 with key assistance from Argentina and other Latin American neighbours.
Preval says the peacekeepers are needed to guarantee public order while he reorganises the Haitian police and judicial systems many say are corrupt and inefficient.
The U.N. force includes a multi national contingent of 7,500 troops and 1,700 police officers and Argentina supplies about 450 troops and police.
Chile's new government also assured Preval that it would continue to support the force.
