Resembling a dinasour's tooth and weighing an astonishing 61 pounds, the Philippine-sourced “Giga Pearl” is one of the largest in the world and could be worth $90 million (P4.7 billion). Asian art expert had it authenticated at the Gemological Institute of America in New York City.

A Filipino now living in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, Abraham Reyes, a mineral broker, owned The Giga Pearl had been a family heirloom for 60 years. Kept it in a bank safe deposit box, although his family did not know it was a pearl and if it was worth anything.
They used to be commonly found and the shells were often used as baptismal fonts or garden ornaments said Reyes.

The natural pearl was hidden within a giant clam his grandfather had purchased from a Filipino fisherman in 1959 in Camiguin, Philippines, an island southeast of Manila, as a gift for Reyes’ aunt.

In 2016, when Reyes’ aunt began divvying up her estate, the mollusk-born treasure and 15,000 Oriental and Philippine antiques were passed on to him.

Reyes said he has no plans of selling the pearl. He had a 22-karat gold-leaf octopus made to hold it. “It is priceless. My goal is to have it brought to the museum or galleries for the world to see it. I want it to be used to create environmental awareness,” he said.

“I want to find a place for it to be showcased,” adding that he believes the pearl has scientific importance. The pearl is believed to be more than 1,000 years old.

“A pearl is [possessed] by luck. Owning it is an honor, It’s such an accomplishment, you were chosen by fate. I want the world to enjoy it,” Reyes said.
