Shuttleworth developed this new, innovative collaborative conveyor system to incorporate a FANUC LR Mate 200iD robot integrated with Rockwell Automation’s SafeZone Mini Safety Area Scanner for high-speed material handling in packaging lines. In developing the system to operate with fenceless technology, the FANUC LR Mate six-axis articulated robot is able to run at 100% speed in normal operating zone. If human intervention is required, the robot will reduce speed and go to zero speed to allow for any correction or inspection needed. A human operator can safely enter the robot’s work zone, inspect and even remove a product from the robot’s gripper if necessary. Once the operator exits the work area, the robot again safely starts back up and continues its operation - No access buttons or reset are required. Shuttleworth’s collaborative systems meet Safety Category 3 PLd as well as all other major requirements necessary for safety performance.

In addition to fenceless technology, Shuttleworth equipped the FANUC LR Mate robot in this system with a unique end-of-arm tool developed by Soft Robotics. This Soft Robotics end of arm tooling is able to pick a variety of products in nearly any shape or size firmly and gently without damaging the product, making it an ideal solution for picking packaged products such as primary and secondary food handling.
