Описание к видео How to Know the Difference between a Skill and an Ability in Curriculum Design

Are you designing your course curriculum and finding it difficult to write skills and abilities? They seem very similar and difficult to distinguish between the two. In this video, I describe how to define the difference between a skill and an ability in curriculum design. In the end, I provide 2 examples and 2 tips.

-----------------------------What´s included-----------------------------

0:00 Introduction
1:20 What are Skills and Abilities
2:00 The difference between the two
2:33 How we learn and build our cognitive abilities
4:45 How to use skills and abilities in curriculum design
6:16 2 Examples of Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
8:44 Final 2 Tips to help you with curriculum design

Consider Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs) like a ladder or stepping stones. KSA are always in this order. First we gain knowledge, to then practice a skill and finally form our abilities. They are never the other way around. This is how you should design your curriculum for your online course.

In the video, we look at Bloom's Taxonomy that shows how we build our cognitive abilities by first understanding and comprehending and then applying and analysing (using our skills). This is curriculum design.

The image used in the presentation is from Fractus Learning, and you can learn more about Bloom's Taxonomy here: https://www.fractuslearning.com/bloom...

You and I can both have the same opportunities to attain the same knowledge and practice the same skills, however, we have different abilities. This is because we form our abilities by collating our knowledge and skill sets and combining them with our interpersonal skills and past experiences. When you design your curriculum, you must identify what the end ability is for your students and then work backwards to be support them build their abilities.

Two examples of Knowledge, Skills and Abilities using Bloom's Taxonomy:

Example 1: Coffee Making

Knowledge:
Identify the difference between a cappuccino and latte

Skill:
Calculate how much milk is required to make a cappuccino and latte

Ability:
Prepare a cappuccino and latte

Example 2: Customer Service

Knowledge:
Recognise the importance of ensuring customer satisfaction

Skill:
Demonstrate excellent customer service to drive customer satisfaction

Ability:
Support peers to provide excellent customer service

Two tips:

1. Work with the end in mind
2. Ask yourself "My students will have the ability to ... "
