India-China make progress on disengagement | Patrolling by Indian troops resumed in Demchok

Recent developments indicate positive progress in the India-China disengagement process, highlighted by the exchange of Diwali sweets between Indian and Chinese troops, marking a significant moment after four years of tension along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). Following this gesture, Indian troops resumed patrolling in the Demchok sector of eastern Ladakh, with plans to initiate patrolling at another friction point, Depsang, soon. India's Defense Minister Rajnath Singh emphasized that the disengagement process is nearing completion and will be advanced through diplomatic and military channels. This development follows a key agreement reached on October 21 and a meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping at the BRICS Summit in Russia, the first such bilateral discussion in five years. The longstanding standoff, which began in May 2020 and escalated with clashes in Galwan Valley, has led to tens of thousands of troops being stationed in close proximity, necessitating careful adherence to disengagement and efforts toward de-escalation.
