There's a million travel art bag options out there from backpacks to Ziplocs. Here, I share the bags I own and why each is unique & useful, both professionally and as a hobbyist. If you're thinking of a new travel art bag, this is a great place to start.
1. PuTwo Insulated Bag • Amazon $17 USD
My every day bag that holds my food, keys, phone, and yes, my art supplies, too!
2. Speck Padded Folio Case • Staples $5 USD (clearance)
Thick, padded, and soft, this case is ideal for a sketchbook, pencils, and markers, or a tablet and stylus for the digital artist. Fits in a larger bag or to keep in the car.
3. Targus Strata Laptop Sleeve • Best Buy $20
Great for a traditional or digital artist. A conservative laptop bag excellent for all kinds of on-the-go art gear. Light but strong, professional but casual, there's plenty of storage, handles, and shoulder strap to make moving about easy.
4. Camelbak MULE w/ Hydration Flask • $100
This biking backpack is what I turn to when out on my mountain bike. In the woods or the city, it's smart design keeps all my art supplies safe, the rugged build will last for year, and 100 oz.water flask keeps me hydrated... and my watercolor cups full!
5. Basic Leather Backpack • $25 - 100
There's nothing better for travel than a basic backpack, whether it's leather, canvas, or synthetic. I've taken mine from the mountains to the sea, and it's lasted many years. So much storage and portability make it a classic travel art bag. Prices vary.
6. Basic Leather Messenger Bag • $50 - 100
More professional in style over a backpack, messenger bags are all about being on the move. Mine has gone from the board room to aboard planes, trains, and automobiles! As a travel art bag, it's strong, rugged and designed for comfort and easy access. Prices vary.
7. L.L. Bean Personal Organizer Bag (medium) • $30 retail / $10 clearance
Designed to carry a toothbrush and shampoo, it only takes imagination to see how useful a personal organizer bag is as a travel art bag. Tough as nails, it easily fits into a larger bag, or great on its own. This one features a hanging hook which is ideal for outdoor use to access art supplies. Cheaper versions can be found at box stores, like Target or Wal*Mart.
8. Samsonite Xenon Laptop Bag • Amazon/retail $80
Reserved for a conservative professional, the depth & functionality of this laptop bag makes it my favorite travel art bag when meeting with clients or vendors. It holds a vast array of art supplies, as well as, tablets, devices, laptops, and more! Perfect for traditional or digital artists.
9. Etchr Labs Art Satchel • $225 USD & Field Case • $68 USD (or Combo • $254)
Limitless customization, waterproof, tons of storage, and designed with artists in mind. This is my local travel bag. Heavy by itself, but loaded with art gear, it's cumbersome going long distances. Not ideal for a plane, unless with minimal gear. Out and about, you'll usually find me with this.
10. Roots Original Leather Briefcase Tribe • $420
Hands down, the most luxurious bag I've owned. Designed for professionals, an artist can carry a host of art supplies. As a travel art bag, it's all about the look and smell of leather. It doesn't win awards for protecting laptops or devices and there's lots of similar bags out there at a much cheaper price. But, if you want to turn heads, this will do it!
11. Wilsons Leather Landon Crackle Backpack • $110
My personal favorite whether going to the woods, mountains, or a tropical island, this bag can handle it all! Ridiculous storage, thickly padded, and a beautiful, unique style that's comfortable and functional. Like the classic leather backpack, this makes for a fantastic travel art bag... and more! There are less expensive versions out there, based on style and build.
12. Ziploc Bags and a Bubble Pack Envelope
When I was a kid, I kept my art supplies in Ziploc bags and kept them in a padded envelope which I took everywhere. Today, recycling is vital and the Ziploc/bubble pack option is a terrific option for anyone on a budget who needs something cheap, yet effective. Perfect for children or students, and with some imagination, the possibilities are endless (hint: duct tape)!
