So, we are on video #7 of our 8-part series on Google My Business.
Trust me, there are plenty more journeys we could take for GMB.
I’m Chuck Magee founder of Raise the Rank the place roofers turn to level up their online marketing and get more roofing leads and better online visibility.
In today’s video, we are going to go rogue.
What do I mean by that?
We will cover some important factors for your GMB listing.
Things you need to know about to rank higher.
There are outside forces that can and do have effects on your GMB profile.
And, today we will go over the most important of these.
Proximity, Relevance, and prominence
It’s one thing to win the local pack right where your office is, it is quite another to win 3 miles and farther from your office.
I will explain how these three factors in relation to the search term affect where you show up in the local pack rankings.
So, first I will go over some things I have seen my clients do in the past that had a negative impact on their Google Maps Ranking.
Having their office out in the country and not in town.
So, how does this affect my searches?
Here’s how.
Obviously, every search is different. However, you may not realize just how different.
You can look at all the ranking factors you want but at the end of the day when someone searches for a roofing contractor the first thing, Google reaches for is proximity.
Simply put, how close to you is the searcher?
This is why it is easy to win a spot in the local pack within 2.5 miles of your office.
According to Local U, the map pack results can and does change every 2.5 miles
This is consistent with what I see in results as well
A pro tip on searches
You will not get accurate and consistent Google results searching on your iPhone or desktop
Every search you do and every click you do will change how Google serves you your next result
What do you mean?
Google is out to serve you what it thinks you like and want
So, every time you click on your own company or a competitor to check out what they are doing
You are altering the next result Google serves you
You must have SEO tools to do searches with
Just another pro tip I discuss with subscribers
Now, back to locations
Office location to population is also why so many companies cheat & want a location.
I think I have proven a location helps.
I have had clients put their offices near their home which might be way out in the country or just not in a heavily populated area.
Huge mistake. You want your office to be where the heaviest concentration of good neighborhoods & houses are.
Does proximity go deeper than what I am saying right here?
You better believe it does. I’ll save more on this topic for another day.
I can have some fun going into this one.
But next, let’s talk about relevance.
Where am I going with relevance?
I am referring to the relevance of your GMB profile and website as it relates to the searcher & the search that was done on Google.
I hear somebody right now.
Chuck what?
Ok, let me go through some searches that are very common on Google and explain how each one is different.
Roofer near me, best roofer near me, local roofer near me
OK, check out what looks like basically the same search.
These are not only 3 different searches they are 3 massively different searches.
What makes these searches different?
Near me is strictly what roofer does Google see closest to the searcher.
That probably simplifies that one too much, but I don’t want to get too deep here
Best roofer near me?
Google will be looking for more in your GMB profile for one, this is where a ton of reviews will get you the click, and then Google will be digging through your website along with other factors even down to your BBB profile.
Along with proximity.
Yes, Google knows everything there is about you. They crawl everything on the web even the secretary of state’s website.
Are you starting to get it yet?
Everything matters.
Now, let’s talk about that last search term. Local roofer near me.
On the surface that might not make sense. Near me, local, they are the same thing.
No, not really.
This is where telling Google you’re local gets you the click.
How?
Content on your website as well as referring domains or backlinks to your website from local companies.
How do you do this?
When you do an ad in the paper or sponsor a little league team make sure they are adding you to their website and then you have a backlink or referring domain from them.
Now, like everything with Google, there can be more to this as well.
According to Google a link like this should be what is called a sponsored link but not many of these local guys will know how to do that, so you get the link.
Well, Chuck, I read a blog that said Google knows when it’s a UGC or user-generated content or sponsored link.
