This episode of New Jersey Life is being shot in Somerville. Somerville is not necessarily a New York City suburb, but it competes with some of the others in terms of dining. As you can see right behind me, the shops are not all about eating. I'm going to walk through downtown to give you a sense of the dining scene.
Somerset County, New Jersey, is one of the richest counties in the state in terms of per capita income and capital. Prices are very competitive in terms of property and demand in this area. In terms of commute time, this is not particularly close to New York City. My example is the Lincoln Tunnel, which leads into midtown Manhattan.
Middlesex County is located in the center of New Jersey and is one of the most populous counties in the state, so many corporate headquarters and campuses are located in Middlesex County. This was the county courthouse until recently, when most operations were relocated to a newer building across the street. The Town of Somerville is one of the best places in the country to buy real estate because it lacks three of the big three and offers reasonable prices. It is not a very large town, either in terms of population or geographical size, but it is very comfortable and has a very small town feel to it. There is also a good amount of diversity here; I believe they had a diversity day about two weeks ago because I had clients here looking at property.
Somerville is a pre-colonial town, as are many others in New England and on the East Coast. We have a rich history that stretches from New England to Georgia and even Florida. I had the Baja tacos, which were shrimp tacos, and they were fantastic, so Turf, Surf, and Earth gets two thumbs up. This is what you'll see along train tracks in New Jersey and parts of New York City, where murals are being installed to keep graffiti at bay.
Is the real estate market in the Northeast experiencing a price drop? No, but some owners and agents are having to lower their prices because inventory is still low. The first property in Essex Union Hudson, a two-bedroom home that was listed at 399.9, was sold at 370 below the asking price, indicating that this is one of those scenarios that you're seeing more frequently where there's some negotiating room. The property was well maintained but not newly renovated, and it was a two-bedroom, not a three-bedroom, so the price points would have been very different. This is an example of what the Somerville neighborhood will look like in a few years, and it's a very lovely, lovely neighborhood. Your homes do have many older styles because they are mostly from around World War II, if not before. Mountain Ave. is literally down the block, two houses down. The main bus line to New York City will run along that street, or you can drive down to the train station.
