Jerusalemite Ittai Binnun draws his inspiration from the many different traditions that make up his truly fascinating city. During a short stroll through a single street in Jerusalem, you can hear chanting from a synagogue, Turkish pop music, Arabic Maqqamat sung at a mosque, a Klezmer clarinet and a Rock band playing in a basement – all at the very same time! This rich cultural abundance all finds its way into Binnun's unique joyful music.
Binnun’s current Quartet has been performing with their “Central Desert” project. The Central Desert is an imaginary geographical area where the Sahara desert meets the Anatolian desert mountains. In this project he band Explores also influences from the music of the nomadic griots of the Mauritanian Sahara, creating a unique sonic character and vibe for this show. Ittai plays many different wind instruments, switching between the Egyptian Kawla flute to Turkish Ney. From Klezmer Clarinet to an Electric Saz, creating a personal mix of many different traditions and sounds.
Arabic Maqam with West African grooves? Turkish Klezmer and Swing Rock? Anything goes as long as it grooves....
