As a mompreneur with six kids (yep, you read that right!) it can be difficult to find the right work/life balance. There's a lot of mom guilt and negative connotations surrounding being a SHEBOSS so in this video I'd like to share my experiences and the strategies that have helped me.
Listen, I've seen and heard it all. I've experienced the exhaustion, the guilt, the mom shaming... and guess what? I resent the fact that some people expect me to have to choose between being an entrepreneur or a mom.
These are my tips for work life balance for entrepreneur moms:
6:13 - Communicate frequently and openly
From the start, I let my kids know what would be happening and what to expect. I also ensured they understood why this was the case and how we could coordinate to guarantee I'd still participate in their activities as my schedule began to change
9:08 - Ignore and eliminate the guilt
Society tells us that as moms, we're the primary care givers and nurturers for our children. As a result, we're often made to feel that if we're doing anything else, we're failing our kids somehow. This can really be emotionally draining. I can think back to many occasions where I received a call from my husband to inform me that one of our children achieved something special - like taking their first steps - only for me to get off the line and cry.
Without even realizing it at the time, I was putting a lot of pressure and guilt on myself. It wasn't until I learned to eliminate that mom guilt - that it was okay not to be there and that it was unfair for society to guilt trip me - that I was able to get past this. Would a man be made to feel the same guilt? Ladies, don't place so much pressure on yourselves. Yes, I'm an entrepreneur but I'm still a great mom, and everything I'm doing from a professional standpoint is just as meaningful to my kids development and success.
11:47 - Ask for help
As women we can be made to feel that if we ask for help, especially when it comes to domestic matters, we're somehow less of a woman. That's just not true! You've got to learn to ask for help. I've become comfortable with it at this stage. Accept that some things you won't be able to do alone, and asking for help doesn't make you less of a mom.
13:19 - Share the vision and goals
I've been very open in sharing my business vision and goals with my kids, and they respect that. It helps them to understand why I'm doing what I am, and how they can hopefully one day be left a legacy because of what I'm building today. I'm very fortunate and grateful that in turn, my kids support me and propel me in that direction.
14:20 - Make a schedule and stick to it!
My children know that there are some things I'll do, and some things I won't do. Dinner, for example, I prepare every day because it's important for me that they have home cooked meals.
13:52 - Bring them to work
Every one of my kids, at some point, have been involved in my business. I've given them all roles and responsibilities, whether that's filing or copying or organizing paperwork. It's important for them to understand what I do, and it also helps them to develop a level of understanding and empathy why I might not be able to take their calls in the middle of the day, for example.
17:00 - Knowing when to stop and focus on them
Family vacations, birthdays, Christmas, holidays - all those things are really important to me. I've learned to embrace us all being together and appreciate certain times as being valuable. There's times you need to work and there's times you need to stop. It's important you learn to distinguish between the two.
