Sermon Description: In earlier generations we see people embracing their obligations. Yet today many Christians avoid the idea of having obligations to God by pointing to grace. Our text today helps us to see that we still must render to God what is God’s. Our text opens with the religious leaders playing games. They were seeking to harm Jesus’ position. The Pharisees joined with their enemies with the enemies to go after their common foe. They tried to trick Jesus with all their empty words of flattery. Then, they tried to set Jesus up with a question about paying taxes that had no easy answer. If Jesus said “yes”, He would be in trouble with Rome. If He said “no”, He would be in trouble with the people. Still, instead of them setting Jesus up, He would set the leaders up. Even after Jesus destroyed their argument, they would not acknowledge Him. Then Jesus responded to the leaders with godly wisdom. Shockingly Jesus declared that Rome did have legitimate claims on the Jews. Yet, above our submitting to earthly rulers, we are to submit fully to God. Finally, we are to give to God what is owed to Him. God’s grace to us does not annul our obligation. We owe God honor and our love.
