Srivatsa: Vishnu's Mark


In the Bhagavata Purana, there is mention of the origin of the Srivatsa mark on Lord Vishnu's chest, symbolizing 'Beloved of Shri.' This began during a yagna conducted by maharishis on the banks of the Sarasvati River, sparking a debate about the supremacy of the Trimurti. To resolve this, Sage Bhrigu is tasked with determining the most superior deity.

Bhrigu first visits Brahma but feels disrespected when not offered a seat. Next, he goes to Kailah and is displeased that Mahadev came to embrace him with a body covered in Bhasma. Lastly, he reaches Vaikuntha, Vishnu's divine realm. There, he sees Vishnu, whose task is the preservation of the world, sleeping like an irresponsible person. In response, Bhrigu gives him a kick on his chest. Contrary to expectations, Vishnu awakens with concern for Bhrigu's foot, apologizes, and vows to bear the sage's footprint eternally as Srivatsa, symbolizing remorse and reverence.

Lakshmi Mata is infuriated by her beloved's disrespect and Bhrigu's act. Her anger leads her to descend to Earth. Later, Vishnu incarnates as Venkideswara, finds her reborn as Padmavati, and remarries her, reaffirming their eternal union.
