Renowned pianist Franz Liszt (Dirk Bogarde) finds himself trapped in an unhappy marriage to Countess Marie D'Agoult (Genevieve Page) and contemplates abandoning his music career to pursue a spiritual calling. His life takes a dramatic turn when he meets Princess Carolyne (Capucine), the enigmatic wife of Russian Prince Nicholas (Ivan Desny). Captivated by her, Liszt embarks on a passionate journey, following Carolyne across Europe and leaving his wife in hopes of building a future with her.
