The 2024 Future of Cancer Care Policy Forum organized by The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network where I delivered remarks on Patient Navigation and the critical importance of this resource in a cancer patient's health trajectory.

When a patient receives a cancer diagnosis, they journey into an unknown frontier. Literally.

From treatments to countless appointments, every day is consumed by their diagnosis and the added stress of financial uncertainty is overwhelming. Patient navigation interventions enhance equal access to care, help alleviate financial toxicity, and improve health and quality of life. However, resource constraints can hinder the widespread use of these programs.

In my speech, I define:
1. patient navigation and its critical role in healthcare;
2. how patient navigators serve as guides through the fragmented healthcare system.

Similarly, I dive into the broader implications of:

1. how effective navigation can improve outcomes for cancer patients;
2. and underscore the need for more comprehensive patient navigation programs in healthcare.

It is sad to say that Patient Navigation is not often talked about hence resulting in existing as a relatively under-utilized service for those who truly need it. And we all do! I was fortunate to have been referred to and guided by a patient navigator at the time my insurance provider was repeatedly rejected just as my cancer interventions were being put in place. It is the reason I am a part of the agenda to heighten awareness and to ensure cancer patients and their caregivers have access to Patient Navigation resources regardless of social determinants of health.

Yes, we are aware that health systems must grapple with ROI (return on investment) questions as they think about scaling the implementation of patient navigation programs but that will not deter us from making sure it is up there on the radar, accessible, and affordable for anyone who is faced with a cancer diagnosis.

I am so thankful to American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network for the privilege in raising my voice and enabling me share my patient expertise regarding the importance of Patient Navigation.

Forums like this showcase the power of collaboration and shared experiences as nothing great ever comes out of silos.

Information is NOT power UNLESS it is applied.

We will keep driving positive change in cancer care and support, health policy and legislation for cancer patients, their families, and the public at large, to ensure positive outcomes and enhanced quality of life all round.

Every cancer patient and their family caregiver should benefit from Patient Navigation.
