Dhanvantari is the god of Ayurveda. The Bala Kanda of the Ramayana and Bhagavata Purana state that Dhanvantari emerged from the Ocean of Milk during the Samudra Manthana. In the Brahma Vaivarta Purana, Dhanvantari faced challenges on a journey to Kailasaa. A confrontation with the serpent king Vasuki's army ensued after a disciple plucked a diamond from the naga Takshaka. The disciples fell unconscious due to the poisonous emissions of the snakes during the battle. Dhanvantari used a potent medicine to revive his disciples and subdue the snakes. Vasuki then sent the serpent goddess Maanasa, but with the intervention of Shiva and Brahma, peace was restored, and all parties continued on their way. There are many temples dedicated to the lord, such as the Dhanvantari temple at Dapoli, District Ratnagiri, Maharashtra. The Thottuva Dhanwanthari temple in Kerala is particularly famous, with Lord Dhanvantari's idol nearly six feet tall and facing east. In Tamil Nadu, within the courtyard of Sri Ranganathaswami Temple , a Dhanvantari shrine sees daily worshipping of the deity. In front of this temple lies an engraved stone believed to be from the 12th century.
