Veddahs of Sri Lanka & their Customs (සිරිත් පොජ්ජ)

The Veddahs of Sri Lanka, and indegenous people, living in this country for centuries, and believed to be descendants of the Balangoda man, are a simple people with simple lifestyles. They show their love for nature, the environment they live in, the flora and fauna and the animals, in everything they do.

These people are rich in customs and traditions which are handed down from generation to generation. From marriage and family life, to the way they hunt and forage for food, and even to the medicines they use for sicknesses and illness, all these are carried out according to set traditions and in-tune with nature.

When the young ones in the community come of age, it is the responsibility of the elders to guide them along the right paths in terms of family life and life in the community, so that their customs live on over the years.

While the Veddah community in recent times has had access to education and even modern technological advances which have improved their way of living, still their age-old traditions and customs live on from generation to generation.

ශ්‍රී ලංකාවට ස්වදේශ්‍රීය වන ජන කොට්ඨාසයක්වන ආදිවාසී හෝ වැද්දන් යනුවෙන් හඳුන්වන මිනිසුන් අදටත් අප රටේ වාසය කිරීම අප රටට පමණක් නොව, මුළු ලොවටම භාග්‍යයකි. ⁣
ආදිවාසීන් මෙම රටේ අවුරැදු 33,000කට පමණ ඉහතදී ජීවත්වූ බලංගොඩ මානවයාගෙන් පැමිනෙන බව එක් මතයක් වේ. කෙසේවුවත් මෙම මිනිසන් ඉතා ඉපැරණි ගතිසිරිත් ඇත්තෝය.
සත්‍ය වශයෙන්ම ගහකොල, ඇලදොල වලට හා සතාසීපාවන්ටද ආදරය කරමින්, ඒවා සෑමවිටම රැකගනිමින්, ඔවුන් ජීවත්වූ පරිසරයට වැඳපුදා තම ජීවිත පවත්වාගත් මෙම මිනිසුන් වර්තමානයේ ජීවත්වන වන අපට මහත් ආදර්ශයකි.
ශ්‍රී ලංකාවට උරැමවූ ආදිවාසී වැදි සංස්කෘතිය අපට හිමිවී තබෙන මහඟු දායාදයකි.
ඉතා වේගයෙන් නැතිවෙමින් යන මෙම ආදිවාසී වැදි සංස්කෘතිය ආරක්ෂා කිරීම වත්මන් ශ්‍රී ලංකිකයන්වන අපගේ පරම යුතුකමකි.
