Taiwan on September 28 unveiled its first domestically developed submarine for testing at a port in Kaohsiung. The submarine test, if successful in its tests, will be a major breakthrough for Taiwan in shipbuilding and design. The project is aimed at strengthening the island's defence and deterrence against the Chinese navy. President Tsai Ing-wen, who initiated the plan when she took office in 2016, showed off the first of eight new submarines in the southern city of Kaohsiung.
