On June 10, 2023, inside the Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York City, Scotland’s Josh “The Tartan Tornado” Taylor, from Edinburgh, put his WBO junior welterweight title on the line against Brooklyn’s own Teofimo “The Takeover” Lopez.

The fight started with Taylor working behind his jab, looking to establish range and test Lopez’s timing. The Scotsman tried to push forward with combinations, but Lopez showed patience, using quick reflexes and sharp counters to keep the exchanges close. In the middle rounds, Lopez began to settle in, slipping Taylor’s shots and firing crisp right hands and left hooks that caught the champion clean.

Taylor attempted to rally, applying pressure and trying to rough up Lopez on the inside, but Lopez’s speed, head movement, and defensive adjustments frustrated those efforts. Round after round, Lopez grew more confident, landing the sharper punches and showing superior timing.

By the championship rounds, Lopez was in control—dictating the pace, making Taylor miss, and connecting with the more telling shots. After twelve hard-fought rounds, the judges scored the fight in favor of Teofimo Lopez by unanimous decision, crowning him the new WBO junior welterweight champion in front of his hometown crowd.
