The bees that protect the hive are called guard bees. If these bee feel threatened they will release a alarm pheromone. This is a chemical message that attracts more bees.

Honey bees are social insects. In this video I explain one of the duties of a bee colony. The guard bee. Honey bees live roughly 6 weeks during the summer. As the bees ages it carries out different duties until it reaches this stage.

Guard bees defend the hive from all different things. From other insects,animal and people. If a guard bee senses trouble it shoots out of the hive and checks it out. If needed it stings the enemy. This sends off an alarm pheromone which other guard bees will smell and come to investigate. This alarm pheromone smells similar to bananas.



BEEKEEPING TIP: If stung while working the bees. Puff your smoker on area stung. This will cover alarm pheromone and keep you from get more guard bees after you.
