While a well ventilated conventional v-notch is the most reliable hearth design for my area, this is by far my favorite of the alternative technique. It seems to work a lot better for me than the two-stick, two-hole, and forked stick methods.

I learned this a couple of years ago from a member on the BCUSA forums (@arleigh) and it is a lot of fun to watch the ember come spewing out of the side of the hearth like a pasta maker.
