Richard Strauss began composing "Ein Heldenleben" in 1898, and it was thought to be autobiographical in nature, but the composer later denied it. Although he dedicated it to the then 27-year-old Willem Mengelberg and the Concertgebouw it received its 1899 premiere under the baton of the composer in Frankfurt.

The present edition is Mengelberg's earliest recording of it, and has been acclaimed as one of his finest. Although famous for its fidelity it wasn't until now that this channel has taken on the challenge of restoring it. It turned out to be just as interesting as expected. In 1928 they were covering a huge orchestra with a single microphone and that always results in some potentially colorful acoustics.

Comparisons of four different editions yielded the present result, in which the effort was to make the solo violin and overall balance sound warmer and more natural.
