Valley Railroad 97: The Connecticut Valley Line | Essex Steam Train & Riverboat [4K]

The Essex Steam Train & Riverboat, also known as the Valley Railroad, has been a cornerstone of Connecticut tourism for over 50 years. The railroad boasts a fleet of three operational steam locomotives, which are paired with the company’s seasonal riverboat offering a unique travel experience. The train winds through the Connecticut River Valley, offering passengers beautiful views on a 12-mile northward journey. The locomotive powering the train is #97, a rare sight at this time of year. Its return to regular service is a special treat for rail enthusiasts and photographers alike.

Valley Railroad 97 was constructed in 1923 by the American Locomotive Company Cooke Works and is classified as a 2-8-0 consolidation. She was originally constructed for the National Railway of Cuba, however, the order was cancelled and 97 was never exported, remaining in the states. In 1926, she found a home on the Birmingham & Southeastern until retirement in 1958. In 1963 she began hauling tourist excursions in the New England area, until finally becoming a permanent resident of Essex in 1973. The locomotive operated until 2010, after which it was sidelined for eight years before returning to steam in 2018. Although operational, the locomotive is in the midst of a cosmetic overhaul, hence the blank tender and weathered appearance.
