It’s estimated that less than 10 percent of all poaching cases in Wyoming are solved. But when the public gets involved and offers useful information to law enforcement, that number… goes way up. As hunting seasons are now under way, the public will again be asked to help the Wyoming Game and Fish Department stand watch over Wyoming’s wildlife. Solving and preventing wildlife crimes like poaching, wanton destruction of game animals and other wildlife-related crimes is crucial in protecting the public’s resource. Information indicates that anywhere from one up to 10 percent of wildlife crimes are detected and result in an investigation with a positive outcome. Other cases remain active, and some go stagnant; some are revived after months thanks to a tip that proves relative. When information is received from the public either through the stop poaching hotline, or other means, about 25 percent of those cases become workable and result in the apprehension and prosecution of a violator. Anonymous tips don’t always have to have the so-called “smoking gun” to be credible-but it’s helpful if reports include details such as a vehicle’s color, or the time and location of that vehicle at the scene of the reported violation. Reporting that violation as soon as possible gives game wardens critical extra time to collect evidence. Poaching is nothing more than stealing wildlife that belongs to a law-abiding public, and with a state as wide open as Wyoming, a simple phone call has often proved to make the critical difference in whether a violator gets away with a crime.

Calls to the stop poaching hotline will remain anonymous, and cash rewards up to $5000 for information are possible. It’s important to mention that the majority of hunters follow the rules, and want to see their hunt be successful, and often prove to provide critical help in investigating some cases.
