1968 - Norma McCorvey becomes pregnant for a third time and is denied the right to an abortion in her native state of Texas. Under the pseudonym ‘Jane Roe’, McCorvey files suit against the state of Texas and district attorney Henry Wade. January 22, 1973 - The Supreme Court issues a 7–2 decision in the case of Roe v. Wade, ruling in favor of McCorvey. The court states that women in the United States have a fundamental right to choose whether or not to have an abortion, and declares the Texas abortion ban unconstitutional. This landmark decision focuses on the right to privacy, established in the 14th Amendment’s concept of personal liberty and the 9th Amendment’s reservation of rights to the people. But, the right to privacy is not absolute and the court rules that states could intervene in the interest of the mother’s health or the life of the fetus. The ruling sparks an ongoing national debate that continues to this day.
