Out on the Frontier – A Tribute to the Farmers of the Mateki Hills
In memory of the Standers, Bristers, Hossops, and all who stood their ground at the BJB Battlefield Ranch and beyond.
This video is a heartfelt tribute to the unsung heroes of the Rhodesian Bush War: the farmers and their families who lived on the frontier, often alone and unprotected, yet unyielding in the face of violence and fear. Inspired by stories in my memoir, 303: The Voice in the Static, this tribute tells of those who risked everything — not just for crops or land, but for their loved ones, their communities, and their right to live free.
From the Mateki Hills to Munetti, from the dusty roads where landmines waited to the homesteads that bore the brunt of terror, these farmers stood like lions. They were more than agricultural workers — they were defenders of their families, their neighbours, and the land they called home.
This tribute recalls the BJB Battlefield Ranch, a name carved into Rhodesian history through sweat, blood, and defiance. We remember Ben Stander, whose calloused hands and unwavering courage defined what it meant to fight not just with rifles, but with the spirit of survival. We honour Archie, who survived an RPG strike that tore through his legs yet continued to fight with the heart of a warrior, never letting fear overcome him.
When ambushes came, when the bush erupted in fire and smoke, it was voices like mine — call sign 303 — that carried their mayday calls. I remember their words, their determination, and their refusal to yield. The farmers of this land tilled soil by day and defended it by night, living with the constant threat of ambushes, mines, and raids. They did not seek glory. They sought only to keep their families safe.
The Bristow Family and the Children of the Frontier
The Bristow children’s bravery is etched into this history. Their small hands loaded FN magazines while their parents fought off attackers. It was a life no child should face — crawling across floors as bullets tore through walls — but they did it with courage born from love and necessity. These moments are not fiction; they are real memories from families who had no choice but to stand together or fall apart.
The Harsh Reality of Landmines and Ambushes
Life on the frontier was not only about standing guard with a rifle. Every road to town, every path to school, was a gamble. Landmines were hidden beneath the dust, waiting to tear apart lives in an instant. A single journey could end in fire and silence, leaving behind cries of loss and echoes of bravery. Every wheel that turned down those red roads carried the weight of fear and faith.
Echoes of Rhodesia – Why We Remember
This tribute is part of the Echoes of Rhodesia project — a musical and storytelling archive dedicated to keeping these memories alive. Through songs, spoken-word tributes, and cinematic scores, we bring history back to life. These are the real stories from 303, told through music and poetry for the generations who still remember and for those who never knew.
Our channel, Echoes of Rhodesia, is not just about war. It’s about honour, community, sacrifice, and resilience. It’s for the farmers, the signallers, the pilots, and the families who endured one of the harshest frontiers in Africa’s history. It’s for the Standers, Bristers, Hossops, and all who fought — not just for the land, but for each other.

📖 ABOUT 303
My book, 303: The Voice in the Static, shares the stories I witnessed as a radio operator on the Beitbridge frontier during the Bush War. It is both a personal memoir and a tribute to the men, women, and children who lived and died in this chapter of history.
