On March 4th, Congressman August Pfluger (TX-11) appeared as a panelist for the Heritage Foundation's launch of the 2026 Index of U.S. Military Strength. As a former U.S. Air Force fighter pilot, Rep. Pfluger spoke on his advocacy for air power.
Read highlights from Rep. Pfluger below:
"I will be advocating for air power. Again, we're paying for eight years of an Obama administration that were appeasers in chief. We're paying for four years of a Biden administration that was just completely detrimental to our service in all aspects. And as I mentioned, in air power, we're the oldest and the smallest that we've ever been. Yet the demand signal is probably the highest it's been, certainly since Desert Storm, and maybe ever, so these weapons systems are being called upon in Venezuela for the initial nuclear strikes and now, once again, for the Iranian issues that we're seeing to achieve strategic objectives. And that's going to continue.
"So the difference now is that we don't have the time, because we know we need it to invest heavily, heavily in air power, but we don't have the time to do that. We have to do it fast. The President has called for a massive increase, almost $500 billion above and beyond, almost a trillion, of what we're seeing on an annual basis. He's right. That's exactly right. And I would say that a lot of that increase in funding needs to go towards air power, because what air power is doing and what is achieving, it's it's going to be important if there were ever some sort of conflict in the Indo Pacific, and it also allows us to deter as good as any other, as any other tool, any other weapon, and any other strategy that we have.
So, the takeaway that I'm seeing right now is we're going to continue to rely on it. We need to invest in it. I see the author of the index, the air power index, at the back of the room, my good friend Jason Campbelletti, and I know Dan Green has poured his heart and soul into this, and their report, unfortunately, sobering, is correct."
