Our children's physiotherapy and occupational therapy experts at the Great North Children's Hospital in Newcastle have designed a poster for parents and carers to support them with developmental play with their children whilst they are in hospital.

As developmental therapists they see patients and their parents and other family members throughout their entire hospital journey.

Some children need to stay for long periods of time on the wards and the team observed that parents and carers often found it difficult to care for their children as they normally would, due to the medical environment.

The team receives referrals when there were concerns about developmental delay, head shape, sensory processing needs, communication and/or feeding difficulties and heard the same queries:

Were they allowed to pick their child up?
Would they hurt them?
Did the lines/ attachments mean they could not touch them?

These worries could all affect bonding and this is what inspired their poster entitled ‘Child Development: Don’t Delay the Play’.

The poster provides helpful information and advice 'at a glance' so that it is quick and easy to understand and can be looked at again and again by parents during quiet times on the wards.

QR codes can be scanned so that the reader can access more information on relevant topics and the pictures represent the demographically and medically diverse children and families we care for, illustrated by our talented colleague Hannah Littler-Smith and kindly funded by the Great North Children’s Hospital Foundation.
