The Two Nations of America

Harry talks again with Mike Podhorzer, the former political Director of the AFL CIO and founder of the Defend Democracy Project, about his recent Substack publication, “The Two Nations of America.” Podhorzer's thesis is that our common conception, that we live in a single federated country is fundamentally mistaken. Instead, we are effectively divided, and have been since the founding, into red and blue nations with dramatically different value systems, economic bases, and distributions of political power. The divides trace in large part from the original gulf between slave-holding and non-slave holding states, but abide very much today, and in fact have been growing since 2008. Seeing the country through that prism, rather than one country at a knife edge of political divide, reconfigures our thoughts about the dynamics of the coming election and the prospects for widespread national reform.
