The Twitter account of the US Central Command was compromised and suspended today after a group claiming to represent the the Islamic State hacked into the account and posted photos, data, and threats aimed at “American Soldiers.”
“While the US and its satellites kill our brothers in Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan we broke into your networks and personal devices and know everything about you,” the group wrote. “You’ll see no mercy, infidels. ISIS is already here, we are in your PCs, in each military base.”
The document dump appears to consist mainly of information already publicly available: including the locations of major roads and power plants in China and North Korea, and directories of the names, ranks and phone numbers of various military officers.
The same group appears to have taken control of CENTCOM’s YouTube page, which they used to post three propaganda videos before the account was shut down.

Ironically, the hack came just minutes after President Obama gave a speech about cybersecurity, telling an audience at the Federal Trade Commission that the “extraordinary interconnection” provided by the Internet “creates enormous opportunities, but also creates enormous vulnerabilities for us as a nation and for our economy, and for individual families.”
CENTCOM is the branch of the military currently carrying out the airstrikes in Iraq and Syria, and training Iraqi troops to combat ISIS in the region.
White House spokesman Josh Earnest told reporters that the hack seems so far to not be cause for alarm. “This is something we take seriously, but there’s a difference between a large data breach and the hacking of a Twitter account.”
Tomorrow, the President is scheduled to give another speech at the Department of Homeland Security on “how we can work with the private sector to better defend ourselves against cyber-attacks.”
