Galton Bridge in Smethwick was built in 1829 and spans what was once the largest earthwork in the world. the canal ( NAVY's) workers removed over a million tons of earth to built the new mainline canal below And Galton Bridge is the largest bridge and grandest bridge built of the many bridges that were built to span the canal.
