Описание к видео 'This is rare': BBC speaks to Indian scientists behind the ‘Alaknanda’ galaxy discovery

Astronomers in India say they have discovered a massive spiral galaxy from a time when the Universe was just 1.5 billion years old. If the Universe is 13.8 billion years old today, this means they are looking 12 billion years into the past.

Galaxies formed this early were usually irregular and chaotic. But when researchers Rashi Jain and Yogesh Wadadekar analysed data from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), they found a fully-formed spiral system, now named Alaknanda.

Their findings, published in the journal Astronomy and Astrophysics, raise new questions about how galaxies took shape after the Big Bang. The BBC's Prachee Kulkarni spoke to the scientists.
