Peaceful protests against needless tree felling of safe, healthy mature roadside trees. Fellings that are under investigation for their legality by the Forestry Commission. Protests broken up by use of force and violence by privately hired door staff security people hired in by AMEY Hallam Highways. Police look on and do not interfere even when a woman who ends up on the ground due to their actions and gets kicked in the head. Police have not investigated or arrested any complaints against these privately hired people despite many complaints being made. South Yorkshire Police have made a number of arrests solely on verbal complains from these ‘security’ people but none have been prosecuted. Only one action resulted in a conviction for not giving details quickly enough for an alleged offence he was found not guilty of. Trees like these are no longer being felled as a matter of routine by Sheffield City council any more. At no extra cost to SCC the contractor AMEY now has agreed to repair the kerbstones instead of felling in the majority of cases with trees that have not been felled. These trees have been saved as a result of protests finally causing a pause in the tree felling ‘Streets Ahead’ PFI contract. That could have otherwise seen 17,500 (50%) of all of Sheffield’s street trees being felled.
