An oyster is a marine animal with a shell of a very irregular shape. They eat algae and other food particles. The word oyster is a common name for a number of different families of mollusks that live in marine ecosystems. Almost all oysters can form pearls, however, the majority of them are not very valuable. Pearls can form in both saltwater and freshwater pearls. Pearl oysters can produce pearls naturally, which is when the irritant enters the oyster unaided.

There are three main components of pearl formation:
1. Irritant: The small irritant, such as a parasite, finds its way into the oyster.
2. Nacre: The oyster slowly secretes layers of aragonite and conchiolin, materials that also make up its shell.
3. Pearl: The irritating object is covered with layer upon layer of nacre forming a pearl.
