Multiday Spearfishing Trip for Yellowtail and Bluefin Tuna (with video commentary)

The islands off the coast of Southern California hold some world class freediving and spearfishing. With a 60 mile run each way, and even further out to the tuna grounds, this is a full on excursion. The reward for all that distance traveled is some incredible structure with wildlife that is much less bothered by us humans. Both the structure and the fish seem to feel bigger out here too.

One of the coolest parts of these overnight trips is that we get a taste of every kind of Southern California diving. Between the coast and the island we are looking for kelp paddies that often hold Yellowtail or Dorado, then out at San Clemente Island we dive the kelp and pinnacles for Yellowtail, White Seabass, Calico Bass, and Sheephead. Then the next day we can stay at the island and explore all the different spots it has, or push further offshore for the Bluefin Tuna! This is very dependent on conditions and recent reports, and as you can see it can often be a challenging day. But when it connects, it's a thrill you'll never forget!
