This is my approach on rebuilding the shifter linkage on my E46 320d.
On 4cyl diesels the linkage is different than on all other variants and is a bit more expensive to replace with OEM parts.

From what I've researched, this style of joint is used on 4cyl diesels in E46, E60, E90 and E87 bodies, maybe some that I've missed as well.

Sorry for the roughness of the video, but I hope my approach and info can help someone trying to fix the same issue on their vehicle.
