Описание к видео BEST VFX MOVIES OF THE LAST DECADE - An In-depth exploration into the best CGI movies of all time

This video is an in-depth exploration into 5 heavy VFX movies that influenced Hollywood cinema in the past decade.

#1 “Edge of Tomorrow”: directed by Doug Liman and starring one of my favorite actor’s Tom Cruise. I know a lot of people criticize him for being a bit eccentric but he really is the pinnacle of a Hollywood star and almost all of his films are extremely entertaining. So, this movie is actually and adaptation of a Japanese novel Adaptation called All You need is Kill and it’s a sort of video gamesque movie about trial and error where the day keeps on repeating itself in an alien world field with war. Pretty much exactly like in a videogame where you restart the stage every time the character dies. What is amazing about this movie is what Framestore’s art department and VFX team managed to do. The first thing that people will probably notice is the animation for the Mimics, which are the alienlike creatures in the movie with their glowing yellow and four limbs, each covered in tentacles and led by rarer Alpha Mimics glowing blue with six limbs with tentacles that can grow and retract.

#2 “The Martian” directed by Ridley Scott. This movie is kind of like Cast Away but set on Mars, and with a ton of technology. This movie is based on Andy Weir’s novel and had a significant amount of input from NASA in order to keep the VFX in line with contemporary technologies. If you haven’t seen this movie, well most of it is set on Mars which made it somewhat hard to shoot on location. In order to create the vast landscapes Framestore had to create 338 outer-space shots and features the build of Hermes which is a 225m in length Spaceship that was created just for this movie. At this scale it creates one of the biggest and most complex structures created for the purpose of a movie. To put it in perspective, that’s two times the size of the international Space Station (ISS). The reason it was made so big was again for accuracy and to ground the movie in reality. It’s just the reality of what a mission such as the one presented would entail storage wise and supply wise.

#3 "Mad Max: Fury Road" directed by George Miller. This movie in some ways feels like a music video with its incredibly high paced car chases, post-apocalyptic setting, out of this world stunts, and incredible pyrotechnics. This whole movie had a lot of false starts before actually going into production, but once they did get the green light it was a full 6 months of shooting in the Namibian desert. In order to create the epic car scenes John Seale, the director of photography had to use multiple cameras in order to capture the 150 vehicles that were conceived, rigged and crashed in order to create this roll coaster of a movie. The actual physical shoot that was done in the Namibian desert and also in Sydney was literally only half of the journey into creating this masterful vision. Hundreds of visuals effects artists worked on this film, led by overall visual effects supervisor Andrew Jackson. This movie has over 2000 visual effects transforming the already epic cinematography into a post-apocalyptic wasteland.

#4 "Inception" directed by Chris Nolan. This is again one of these films that uses a lot of oldschool techniques, simply because there were a ton of practical effects that were interlaced with CGI in order to make everything seem plausible. After all this movie is all about bending reality and dreams within dreams that are literally within more dreams. The concept of the movie in itself is genius and the fact that they pulled off some of the most intricate real-life VFX scenes is pretty astounding. In order to create the breathtaking VFX Chris Nolan worked with a VFX company Double Negative and visual FX supervisor Paul Franklin. Speaking of practical prop work we cannot go on speaking about Inception without mentioning the spinning corridor and hotel room.

#5 "Blade Runner 2049" directed by Denis Villeneuve. This is another movie that is set in the not-so distant future and feature so many VFX techniques and shots that it could be a video in itself. Blade Runner 2049 being a sequel to the cult 1982 film needed to be able to mimic the tonal and visual similarities of its predecessor. Set 31 years after the events of the original film, where Harrison Ford is a former police officer hunting humanoid “replicants”, this time Ryan Reynolds goes back into a dystopian Los Angeles where he is in charge of retiring rogue replicants. This movie, trying to make a big homage to its predecessor had to make use of incredible sets and VFX techniques in order to create a realistic future. One of the most impressive feats in this movie, albeit being a very short scene, is how they were able to digitally recreate Rachel, a character from the 1st film in order to show an ageless replicant.
