It’s that time of year where the holiday winter wonderland has been replaced by dreaded frozen mud, so here are some of our best tips for clearing out snow this winter.

Let’s start with the snow shovel. While it does a great job scooping accumulated snow off front steps and walkways, it tends to get a fair amount of snow stuck on it, rendering it unscoopable. To prevent this, spray the shovel with cooking spray before heading outside. It will keep the snow from sticking, and give you more scoops.

While we’re out on the porch, try laying down a tarp before the snow falls. Secure it with bricks or rocks, and leave it for the duration of the storm. Once it’s done, just slide the tarp away and shake off all the snow—no shoveling or scraping required!

When you go out to shovel, create your own waterproof gloves by wearing disposable vinyl gloves over your normal ones. Just secure them around your wrists with rubber bands to keep your hands dry and warm.

Then head over to your car. Protect your windshield wipers from freezing over by covering them with long tube socks. Then wrap your rear-view mirrors in plastic bags, secured with rubber bands to prevent frost. When you come back after the snow, simply remove the socks and bags and hit the road.

Finally, if you have drafty windows (especially during a windy snow storm), cut off small pieces of shelf liner and stuff into the crevices. This will prevent drafts and drips from melting snow from entering your windows.
