I’m often asked by families, what should I look for in a treatment program for my young adult child?

The problem is that finding the right young adult treatment program can feel overwhelming. And the good news is that it doesn’t have to be difficult if you know what questions to ask.

Searching for the right treatment program to suit someone from 18 to 28 years of age can be challenging. Finding a program that has exceptional expertise in dealing with young adults is not always easy.

I’d like to give a few tips on how to find a treatment program suitable for the unique needs of a young adult.

TIP # 1 Look for a fully licensed and nationally accredited program that specializes in young adults. Treating young adults is different than other age groups. They can make decisions for themselves, but are still emotionally and financially connected to their parents. If they still need to finish high school and get a diploma, look for a program that has an integrated onsite curriculum.

TIP #2 Often a family owned and operated program will have a deeper connection and care more for their clients. They are more likely to hire quality clinicians and staff while promoting their mission and ethical standards. The staff should be able to provide the skills needed to avoid falling back into negative behaviors, knowing how important it is to integrate the family as part of the solution.

TIP #3 The best programs have a full continuum of care to provide lasting recovery. This should include detoxification, primary residential treatment, long term extended care, supportive transitional living and after care services. Co-ed programs are great, and they should also include gender specific housing and therapeutic programming.
