Описание к видео Spare Parts #1 - Making, Hardening And Tempering A Keyway Cutter For The Lathe

Making, Hardening And Tempering A Keyway Cutter For The Lathe, by Clickspring.

This is the first episode in the new "Spare Parts" short video series, with content that is based on a single process, rather than on a completed project. More than likely it is a sub process that has been broken out from a standard length project video.

The title says it all regarding the content, and the main project video that this video is related to is "Making A Replacement Pulley With A Keyway":    • Machining A Replacement Pulley With A Keyway

Abbreviated Transcript:

00:06 I'm in the middle of making this replacement pulley for my belt sander, and I need to make a keyway cutter so I that can cut this keyway on the lathe. And I'm going to make it from this piece of tool steel.
00:16 I want the cutter to slice a groove into the side of the pulley bore, as the cutter travels along with the lathe carriage, so I'm after a profile that looks something like this. It needs to be able to reach in just a little bit beyond the full depth of the hole, as well as fit inside without catching as I take that first cut.
00:35 A quick trip to the grinder forms the basic shape. And then a little bit of honing on an oilstone forms the cutting edge prior to hardening.
00:45 At this stage I'm just removing the grinder marks, I'll do the final sharpening once it's
been hardened.
01:00 The cutter was then taken to red heat, and quenched in oil. At this point the steel is glass hard, and
a file just skates over it. But it's too brittle for use; it needs to be tempered.
01:27 So I gave it a quick rub on the stone to bring up a shiny surface, and now I can see the color change at the cutting edge as I temper it. I'm aiming for a light straw color.
01:49 The cutter is now both tough and hard, and just needs some final sharpening.
01:57 A bit more time on the sharpening stones, and that cutting edge is now ready for work.
